Work Ethics

To be effective, the career education of our team members (students at GICA are referred to as team members)  must include two elements.  First, it must provide comprehensive and challenging skills development and experiences that approximate the conditions found in the actual work place.  Second, and often more important to employers, it must identify and develop those personal characteristics or good work habits that we refer to as "good work ethics."  Studies have shown that 85 percent of people who lose their jobs do so because they lack good work habits rather than lack appropriate job skills. Factors most often cited are tardiness and absenteeism.

Teamwork

GICA has developed a system to promote, teach and evaluate these characteristics, and team members will receive a work ethics grade and a  normal performance grade for each career course.  In addition, repetitive tardiness and absenteeism can also affect a team member's performance grade in a course.

Work Ethics Grade

3   Exceeds Expectations — work ethics performance was exemplary
2   Meets Expectations — all work ethics standards were met
1   Needs Improvement — some work ethics standards were not met
0   Unacceptable — work ethics performance was below average

Work Ethics Influence on Performance Grade

Absences:

  • A team member is allowed to miss five (5) days per semester without penalty.  After the fifth absence, the team member will lose two points per day from the final nine week grade.  These two points represent the team member's class participation grade component.
  • A team member who is absent from class may make up work for one to eight absences per semester.  However, two points per day will still be deducted for any absences beyond five.
  • After the eighth absence, makeup work will not be allowed.

Suspensions:

  • Any team member who is suspended from school may not make up any missed assignments.
  • Any suspended team member will lose two points per day from their overall grade.

Tardies

  • After two tardies per nine weeks, the team member will have one point deducted from their nine-week average for every tardy.
  • Any team member with excessive tardies could be subject to disciplinary action which may include detention or loss of driving privileges.

Skipping

  • A team member who is caught "skipping" class will automatically lose two points per occurrence.
  • A team member caught "skipping" will not be allowed to make up any missed assignments.
  • A discipline referral will be issued for any team member caught "skipping."

Good Attendance Rewards

Absences                                 Tardies                            Added points
0-1                                           2 or less                                     3
2                                              2 or less                                      2
3                                              2 or less                                      1

Earning Back Points

Any team member who attends 20 consecutive days without any absences or tardies can earn back two points to their nine-week grade.  This is only for a team member who has already had points deducted.  The 20 consecutive days must be within the same grading period as when points were deducted.
