Construction Career Pathway

The construction career pathway offers numerous employment opportunities including positions in carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and electrical services.

Construction is one of the nation’s largest industries with over 7 million wage and salary jobs and 1.9 million self-employed workers. Construction includes the building of new structures as well as additions and modifications to existing ones. Employment in the construction industry can be gained through a variety of educational and training backgrounds. Those entering construction out of high school usually start as laborers, helpers or apprentices. The skills required for many construction jobs take years to learn and are usually learned through some combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training. The more education received, generally the more skilled workers become. Opportunities for workers to own their own business is better in construction than in many other industries. Construction workers need only a moderate financial investment to become contractors and many can run their businesses from their homes.

Construction Career Pathway
This Pathway is designed to prepare a student with foundational knowledge and skills for a construction career in one of four possible construction crafts. It also is a good pathway for a student to prepare for a variety of opportunities in addition to the craft areas, such as architecture, construction engineering and construction management. As the student progresses through the pathway, they are given the opportunity to explore four construction craft areas on an introductory level. Once they have completed the foundational and introductory levels they are then given the option to “major” in at least one of four craft areas. These areas are carpentry, masonry, electrical, and plumbing. Upon successful completion of four units within this pathway, in an industry accredited program, the student will earn at least two industry credentials with the possibility of others.
